Rajasthan bans camel slaughter
Jaipur, April 1 (ANI): In view of dwindling population of camels, the assembly in Rajasthan passed Rajasthan Camel (Prohibition of Slaughter and Regulation of Temporary Migration or Export) Bill, which banned camel slaughter in the state. Last year, Rajasthan designated camel as its state animal, hoping to curb the growing illegal trade of camels and camel meat. The bill passed through voice vote bans slaughtering, trading and unauthorised transportation of camels and set a five-year jail term and a fine for slaughtering or injuring the animal, popularly referred to as ship of the desert. However, camel can be used for domestic and agricultural purposes. Agriculture Minister of Rajasthan, Prabhulal Saini, said that camels were used in the state for a variety of purposes like patrolling the borders, tourism etc and hence were of much importance. This bill comes close on the heels of a recent beef ban clamped in Maharashtra.
