Farmers call for shutdown in Tamil Nadu over river water sharing dispute

Coimbatore/ Karnataka, March 28 (ANI): A call for shutdown by farmers in Tamil Nadu brought daily life to a halt in the cities of Chennai and Coimbatore on Saturday (March 28). The shutdown was organised to protest Karnataka state government’s decision to construct a dam over Cauvery River, as Tamil Nadu says the move would affect the natural flow of the river water. Karnataka is in dispute with Tamil Nadu over access to water from their shared Cauvery River. Farmers of Tamil Nadu say the dam would severely affect irrigation in the state and demanded Central government’s intervention to resolve the matter. Meanwhile, in Chennai the streets were deserted and the normal din of horns from cars, trucks, buses and motorbikes was absent. There was no commercial activity.
