Congo News: Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) or the DR Congo or RDC was formerly Zaire and derives its name from the Congo or Zaire River. The DR Congo is surrounded by nine African states and has only a 40 km coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. The DRC is also called Congo-Kinshasa after its Capital Kinshasa to distinguish it from the Republic of Congo, which is called Congo-Brazzaville. Congo has been devasted by continuous war and internal strife that began in 1998 and is popularly termed ?Africa?s World War?. The war has led to nearly 5.4 million people being killed particularly in East Congo and one estimate states that nearly one thousand Congolese are killed in the conflict everyday. The war that is raging between the rebels and the DR Congo government led by Joseph Kabila is mostly after control of Congo?s considerable mineral resources.
