Heat wave continues in Punjab, Haryana

Chandigarh, May 17 (IANS) Residents of the union territory of Chandigarh and neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana continued to reel under heat wave conditions Sunday with the mercury staying above 40 degrees Celsius, the weatherman said.

 

Hisar town in Haryana was the hottest in the region at 46.7 degrees Celsius, which was six degrees above average, meteorological officials said.

 

 

Ambala and Karnal towns in Haryana recorded 40.8 and 40.2 degrees Celsius respectively.

 

 

'The temperature recorded at most of the places in the region is above the 40 degree mark, that is four to five degrees above the normal. It was also accompanied by fast blowing hot winds all across Punjab and Haryana that further aggravated the situation,' the duty officer at the meteorological office here told IANS.

 

 

The temperature recorded in the state capital Chandigarh was 40.8 degrees Celsius, four degrees above average.

 

 

In Punjab, the cities of Ludhiana and Patiala recorded 42.4 and 42.1 degrees Celsius respectively, while the temperature in Amritsar was 39.4 degrees Celsius.

 

 

According to Met officials similar conditions would prevail in the region in the coming days.
