Trinamool Congress takes early lead in two Bengal seats

Kolkata, May 16 (IANS) West Bengal's main opposition Trinamool Congress took an early lead in two constituencies while Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) heavyweight Jaswant Singh was ahead in Darjeeling as counting of votes polled for the 42 Lok Sabha seats of the state was underway Saturday.

 

In Kolkata's neighbouring Howrah district, Trinamool candidates forged ahead in two constituencies, which were bagged by Left Front major Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) in the previous polls five years back.

 

 

In Howrah, Trinamool's Ambica Banerjee was leading by 1,613 votes over CPI-M sitting MP Swadesh Chakraborty, while another Trinamool candidate Sultan Ahmed was ahead in Uluberia over Hannan Mollah of the CPI-M by 1,414 votes. Mollah has won eight times from the seat.

 

 

In Darjeeling, Jaswant Singh was ahead by 7,343 votes over sitting MP Dawa Norbula of the Congress, according to figures provided by the state election department here.

 

 

In Cooch Behar, Forward Bloc candidate Nripendra Nath Roy was leading by 1,304 votes over Arghya Roy Pradhan of the Trinamool Congress.
