Denied promotion, woman trooper approaches court

National, Mon, 11 May 2009 IANS

New Delhi, May 11 (IANS) A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) woman trooper has charged in the Delhi High Court that the paramilitary force deprived her of a promotion on medical grounds after she was injured while fighting terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.

Jayanti Parihar, a CRPF head constable, approached the court alleging that instead of rewarding her for her act of bravery, the government and the CRPF were depriving her of a promotion.

Advocate Rekha Palli, appearing for the petitioner, contended that Parihar be promoted to sub-inspector from the date her juniors got the rank.

A bench comprising Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and S.C. Mishra Monday issued notice to the central government and the CRPF and asked them to file their responses.

Parihar was deployed at Srinagar airport in 2001 when six militants had staged an attack. Parihar was injured in the ensuing gun battle between the terrorists and the security forces.
