Sep 18 : The TV’s highest award Emmy ceremony gave the award for various categories. ‘Sopranos’ manage to win three awards, which were given the standing ovation, and cheering of the gathering.
Sopranos was aired from 1999 to June this year. This highly acclaimed series is considered as one of the greatest of all the time.
It won the best drama and two other awards in the ceremony.
But the best actor award went to James Spader of Boston Legal who beat James Gandolfini, star of Sopranos.
Dame Helen who won the best actress award for the mini serials cheered, "You know, you Americans are wonderfully generous people, who won Best Drama actress for mini series. You're a lot of other things as well - some good, some bad - but you know if I was to categorise your natures it's generosity above all."
She got the award for her role as Detective Superintendent Jane Tennison in ‘Prime Suspect: The Final Act’.
Ricky Gervais, was honoured the best comedy award for playing hapless actor Andy Millman in his BBC sitcom Extras, though he was absent in the ceremony.
This award was the biggest surprises of the night, as he was able to beat favourites Steve Carell, who stars in the US version of The Office, and 30 Rock's Alec Baldwin.
The Sapronos enjoyed the award amidst the cheering of the crowd.
"This amazing cast is really what it comes down to. It really is all about them," the show's creator and director David Chase said.
Sally Field took her third Emmy as a best drama actress for her outstanding performance as a lead actress in a drama for the series Brothers and Sisters; Edie Falco was the other claimer who played Tony Soprano’s wife Carmella.
James Spader, who won best drama actor, said: "I feel like I just stole a pile of money from the mob and they're all sitting right over there."
Terry O'Quinn and Katherine Heigl were given Supporting actor and actress simultaneously.
The best comedy award was won by 30 Rock.
US vice president Al Gore, got the biggest cheer of the crowd won outstanding creative achievement in interactive television, the award came for his Current TV - a cable channel based on viewer-created content.
"We are trying to open up the television medium so that viewers can help to make television and join the conversation of democracy and reclaim American democracy by talking about the choices we have to make," he said.
Tony Bennett on his 80th birthday won three awards, including best individual performance in a music programme.
Ryan Seacrest hosted the Ceremony. He is the host of American Idol.
Three million viewers less then last year watched the Sopranos.
Nielsen Media Research revealed that Emmy lost it viewers to the National Football League game on NBC.
The Emmy Awards are given in recognition to the excellence in various areas of television industries. Awards are decided on the ballot caste by over 13000 members of the academy. Emmy Awards are administered by three-sister organisation Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
