New Delhi, April 29 (IANS) Unlike other political parties' leaders, candidates of the Bharat Punarnirman Dal (BPD) - a congregation of former IITians and professionals - are taking up issues such as misuse of the dowry law, need for judicial reforms and freedom of the media.
The BPD is contesting three Lok Sabha seats in the ongoing elections.
Sudhir Kumar of the BPD, for instance, who will be contesting in the New Delhi constituency has been quite vociferous against the misuse of Section 498 (A) of the Indian Penal Code, or the anti-dowry law.
'There has been gross misuse of Section 498 (A), in which innocent families have been harassed to no end in the name of law. We, therefore, demand amendment of this section of the law,' said Kumar, who formerly worked with the merchant navy.
'We also feel that matrimonial litigation should be civil, unless there is strong proof or any reason to go to court. Under political and judicial leadership such changes can be brought about and hundreds of families which are falsely implicated because of loopholes in the law, can be saved,' he added.
The BPD also wants changes in the Prevention of Domestic Violence Act, to bring about gender neutrality and domestic harmony. The party has been campaigning for this.
'We also aim to promote the armed forces and merchant navy as attractive career options for our youth. We want to encourage corporate executives to join the Territorial Army and assure all ex-servicemen and women that we will take good care of them,' he said.
'We are also all for freedom of the media and will encourage local and private radio players to air political, social and financial talk shows,' Kumar added.
