Chennai passport official caught accepting bribe

Chennai, April 25 (IANS) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Saturday arrested a senior official of the Regional Passport Office (RPO) here for allegedly accepting a bribe from a travel agent, who has also been held, an official statement said.

 

The duo have sent to two weeks' judicial custody, the statement added.

 

 

According to the statement, RPO official Sumathi Ravichandran and travel agent Fatima Muzaffar Ahmed were arrested by the CBI's anti-corruption department on a complaint about their nexus to get out-of-turn passports issued.

 

 

Searches at Ravichandran's residences led to the seizure of about Rs.500,000 in cash, documents relating to property worth Rs.10 million and a huge cache of jewellery, shares of blue-chip companies and mutual funds, besides other documents relating to additional hidden wealth, the statement added.
