Rainwater harvesting in Uttarakhand

Nainital, Tue, 14 Apr 2009 ANI

Nainital, Apr 14 (ANI): A couple in Nainital district of Uttarakhand has set an example of innovativeness by adopting rain water harvesting without using any artificial device.

The couple Parmeshwar Narayan Shivpuri and Doris Shivpuri came to Nanital in 1990. Initially, the water problem they faced led them to find other ways to harvest the rain water, which earlier used to go waste. This led them store the water and put it to multiple use.

Doris Shivpuri, the wife, elaborated her water problem.

"Water was our biggest problem when we shifted here because there was no permanent water source besides a small water tank nearby," said Doris Shivpuri.

Parmeshwar Narayan Shivpuri, the husband said that the rainwater collected is stored in the water tanks, which is later, used as when required.

"First of all, we collect rain water. We have three water storage tanks one has a storage of 21,000 liters, other is of 5,000 liters and the third one is of 4,000 liters. As far as the first tank is concerned, we make use of the drip irrigation and take water out of it using a motor," said Parmeshwar Narayan Shivpuri.

Water harvesting technologies play a dominant role in roviding hill farmers a continuous supply of water which they are deprived of due to the erratic and uneven distribution of rainfall in the area. By Vipul Goel (ANI)
