PDP questions NC on development issues of J&K

Srinagar, Sat, 11 Apr 2009 NI Wire

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti has said her party would make the Government accountable for its incompetence in addressing the security and developmental concerns of the people. “We will not allow the National Conference to repeat its age-old tactics of taking votes by promising sky to the people and then bartering their interests and that of the State for the comforts of power,” she said.

Addressing a day-long convention of the PDP workers from Sonawar constituency on Sunday, Mehbooba accused the NC leadership of resorting to emotional blackmail and divisive tactics to hoodwink, for political gains, the emancipated citizens of Srinagar.

“I want to ask the NC leaders, who have ruled the State for around three decades, what have they done for the development of this historic city,” she said and added the people of Srinagar city have a right to know where have Rs 33 crore of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) the NC legislators (including their MP’s Dr Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah) were entitled to between 2002-2008 gone.

Mehbooba said leaving aside the NC legislators in the State Legislature who had a cumulative CDF of Rs 13 crore for six years, let Dr Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah give the account of the Rs 20 crore Member Parliament Local Area Development (MPLAD) funds, they were entitled to as MP’s for five years (2004-2009).

“I am sure if Dr Abdullah has the courage to make the expenditure statement of his MPLAD fund, for the last five years public, the people of Srinagar city would not only be surprised but rather shocked to learn where actually the NC stalwart has spent this huge money that was their right,” she said and added that even the NC legislators in the State assembly had held their hands back on spending their CDF during the past six years, barring a few MLAs, to create an impression that no development is taking place in the Srinagar city.

Mehbooba said what justice people can expect from such legislators who play politics even with the development funds given to them by the Government for the development of their constituencies. “The people of Srinagar must get up and not only seek their due but also make their representatives accountable for their actions,” she said.

Blaming the Farooq Abdullah-led National Conference Government of having snatched the bread and butter of thousands of families in Srinagar by banning Shatoosh trade in June 2000, Mehbooba said this anti-Kashmiri decision was taken by the then NC Government on the behest of Omar Abdullah who was a Union Minister of State in the Commerce Ministry at that time.
