Jalandhar Sikhs intensify protests over clean chit to Tytler

Jalandhar, Sat, 04 Apr 2009 ANI

Jalandhar, Apr 4 (ANI): Hundreds of Sikhs burnt effigies of Congress leaders, including party president Sonia Gandhi, and vandalized party's office in Jalandhar as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) gave clean chit to former Union Minister Jagdish Tytler in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case.

On April 2, the court gave clean chit to Tytler after the CBI said that it did not have sufficient evidence against the Congress leader.ikhs want the Central Government to take action against Tytler, who according to them, instigated rioters after then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated in 1984.

"I want to make an appeal to people of the entire country to not to vote the Congress in the upcoming general elections. In Punjab they should lose all 13 seats. This would be like an ointment to our wounds and would also be true homage to those who died in the riots," said Surjeet Kaur, a protester.

At least 2,733 people were killed, in reprisal killings after Indira Gandhi's assassination, which was carried out to avenge her decision to send troops to flush out Sikh separatists from the Golden Temple in Amritsar. (ANI)
