Notice to Tamil Nadu for suspending police officers

National, Wed, 25 Mar 2009 IANS

New Delhi, March 25 (IANS) The Supreme Court Wednesday sought the Tamil Nadu government's justification for suspending its two senior police officers, accused of ordering a baton-charge on a rampaging mob of lawyers in the Madras High Court premises Feb 19.

A bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan sought the justification on a lawsuit by the two suspended police officer - Chennai Additional Commissioner of Police A.K. Viswanathan and Coimbatore's Deputy Inspector General M. Ramasubramani.

The bench also issued a notice to various lawyer bodies of the state, who had been demanding the removal of the police officers.

The state government suspended the officers after the Madras High Court found that the two had overstepped their authority in ordering the baton-charge on the lawyers, who had gone berserk in the high court premises to protect one of their colleagues from arrest for assaulting Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy in a courtroom.

The case has been posted for further hearing April 6.
