Uttrakhand School for physically challenged 'suffers' from dearth of fund

Dehradun, Wed, 18 Mar 2009 ANI

Dehradun, Mar 18 (ANI): A school for physically challenged children in Uttrakhand is now on the verge of closure due to the State Government's apathy.

Nanhi Duniya Badhir Vidhalaya in Dehradun is suffering from dearth of funds, as the Social Welfare Department has not released aid to the school for the last two years.

Founded in 1972, it now runs on donations contributed by the residents.

"It's becoming very difficult to manage food for the children. I go and ask for ration from various societies and they give, but that is also not enough. And now the school is on the verge of closure," said Kumud Joshi, Principal, Nanhi Duniya Badhir Vidhalaya.

The teachers who have been teaching in the school for the last 20-30 years are reluctant to leave as they have become emotionally attached to the school and the students.

"We have not received our salaries for the past 24 months and that's why we are very worried. Not only us, even the children in the hostel are much worried. It's very difficult to manage food for them. We teachers and our Principal ask donations from various people. The entire burden is on Principal's shoulder and she goes and meets people and collects ration and that's how the hostel is running now," said Gian Bindra, a teacher.

When asked about the pathetic condition of the school, the District Magistrate Amit Negi feigned ignorance but assured however of doing the needful.

"Now you have informed me, I will immediately ask the Social Welfare department to move the file and release the funds as soon as possible," said Negi. By Ashish Goel(ANI)
