KCK award to honour print journalist

New Delhi, Thu, 05 Feb 2009 Nava Thakuria

The Rajasthan Patrika Group, a major media house in north India has announced the Second KCK International Award 2008 with the theme of Terrorism & Society.

Constituted in the memory of Karpoor Chandra Kulish, the founder of the media group, the award is aimed to recognize the efforts of print journalists in 'upholding professional values as well as protecting and promoting ethics and morality, right and freedom of the people for better quality of life'.

Rajasthan Patrika, the Hindi daily published from the group, has achieved the credibility of a trusted newspaper in the due course of time. Published from Rajasthan, the daily has 12 editions from the State alone. It also runs 5 other editions from Gujarat, Kanataka, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. The newspaper was launched in 1956 by KC Kulish with a borrowed capital of Rs 500 (about 100 US dollars then).

"The phenomenal growth from virtual scratch was possible only due to KC Kulish's grit and determination and his faith in the people of Rajasthan, who responded generously to his brand of journalism based on truth, courage and independence. Kulish never swerved from the path of fairness and honesty. Professional excellence went hand in hand with coverage of news and expression of views always focused on public interest and welfare. He set high standards and healthy traditions for his successors to imbibe and follow," stated in an official release from the award committee.

The award for excellence in print journalism is open to those who have authored and published the most compelling news-stories in media contributing to changing the lives and meeting the aspirations of people. The world media, in particular the print media, assumes a crucial role when it comes to handling the most critical situations. It assumes high level of responsibility when it comes to reporting events of sensitive significance.

"It is our humble endeavour to honour those journalists who strived hard to help the society to fight and safeguard itself from several eventualities in mind and spirit. The central point of this award is that journalists accomplish their work through a narrative duality. During everyday news, journalists apply a professional narrative that represents a balance between their core journalistic values and the social pressures from their working world," added in the release.

The KCK award winner will receive US$ 11,000 with a medal and certificate. The team of three will have to apply for the award. Moreover the awards are restricted to print media only. Apart from the highest award, ten other entries shall receive special mention and would be given certificate & medal.

The first KCKI 2007 award went to Afshan Subohi (of Dawn, prominent English daily from Pakistan) and her team for an article titled as Why does corporate Pakistan detest democracy and Nilesh Mishra (of Hindustan Times) and his team for The new Muslim series-from Masjid to Market a journey. Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the former Indian President gave away the awards in a glittering ceremony in New Delhi.
