A N Roy's appointment as Maharashtra DGP stayed

Mumbai, Thu, 05 Feb 2009 ANI

Mumbai, Feb 5 (ANI): The Bombay High Court today stayed the appointment of senior IPS officer A N Roy as Maharashtra's Director General of Police, terming it as 'contrary to law'.

The court granted four weeks time to the State Government to appoint a new DGP.

An application was filed by another IPS officer Suprakash Chakravarti before Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), challenging the appointment on the ground that Roy had superseded three other officers to the post.

Later, the CAT had held that while appointing Roy as DGP the State did not comply with the Supreme Court's directions in an earlier case.

Both Roy and the State Government challenged CAT's decision in the High Court.

On Thursday, a Division Bench headed by Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar upheld the CAT's order and termed Roy's appointment as contrary to the law.

Roy was appointed to the top post in February, 2008. (ANI)
