Linux is now available on pre-installed laptops

Aug 08: Linux, a widely accepted open source operating system and Lenovo, one of the world's biggest PC manufacturers took another step into the computer field, as Linux is now available in the market on pre-installed laptops from Monday, official announced.

Linux is now available in built-in laptops like desktops while this facility was not available since yet unlike PCs. The users had to install it later as an alternative in earlier days. But Lenovo and Novell will provide the Linux software on the laptops. Dell has also announced earlier this year to introduce shipping PCs with pre-installed Linux OS, which will be available in the market at the forth quarter of this year.

Lenovo introduced Linux based laptop in LinuxWorld, an annual conference held in San Francisco. "We have seen more customers utilizing and requesting open source notebook solutions in education, government and the enterprise, and today's announcement expands upon our efforts by offering customers more Linux options," said Sam Dusi, a Lenovo executive. Linux has also announced its future plans in the conference.

On the other hand Dell introduced Linux-powered PCs after chief executive Michael Dell asked customers for suggestions for new products on the company's website.

Linux is a free, open source operating system usually used by 6 percent of computer users across the globe that has been developed by Linus Torvalds, who wanted to create a non-commercial alternative to an operating system as against Microsoft’s Windows for using many universities and big organizations.

The operating system was released for the public16 years ago. It was primarily developed for the network servers, but it became popular mostly in desktops. Linux can be freely distributed, modified and used by anyone who wants it. It is predominantly used to power web servers and while its growth on desktop computers has been limited to technology specialists.
