New Delhi, Jan 16 (IANS) The air force and the navy will showcase some recent acquisitions at the Republic Day parade, including the Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) and Advanced Jet Trainer Hawks as well as the amphibious transport dock INS Jalashwa.
'The IAF (Indian Air Force) tableau will consist of a scaled down AWACS aircraft as the base with models of the newly inducted Hawk and Sukhoi-30MKI and Rohini 3 D Radar,' said Air Commodore N.K. Arora, principal director (ceremonials).
The Israeli built AWACS, Phalcon, is a true force multiplier which would boost IAF's capabilities by providing 'comprehensive area detection' and generate a 'complete and reliable situational awareness picture at land, sea and air targets' by information from its sensors, he said.
He described the Hawk as a modern trainer aircraft. 'It has a state of the art cockpit, which familiarises the pilot with latest technology. SU-30 MKI aircraft is one of the most advanced modern fighter aircraft, capable of multi role operations.'
The tableau will follow the marching contingent, comprising four officers and 144 airmen and will be commanded by Squadron Leader R.S. Zenda.
The flypast, perhaps the most looked forward to event in the entire parade, will include the Mi-17, Mi-35 and Advanced Light Helicopters flying in different formations along with the mid-air refueller IL-78 in 'big boy' formation. Jaguars, MiG-29 and Sukhoi-30 MKI will also fly past the Rajpath.
The Indian Navy tableau will depict the INS Jalashwa. Its primary role is supporting 'amphibious operations' by transporting, deploying and recovering troops and equipment by using mechanised landing craft and aircraft.
'The ship can land troops of an infantry battalion and their equipment, a squadron of tanks or armoured personnel carriers or a complete unit of engineers with their heavy equipment,' a senior naval official said.
In the event of a natural calamity, the INS Jalashwa can be used for providing humanitarian assistance and as a hospital ship.
The marching contingent comprising 144 men will be led by Lt Commander Anshul Awasthi.
