National, Fri, 09 Jan 2009 IANS

Raipur, Jan 9 (IANS) At least 14 students are on the run in Chhattisgarh after they were accused of ragging their juniors at the hostel of a college here, police said Friday.

Fourteen B.Sc first year students of Government Science College were slapped about 90 times one by one in the institute's Shastri hostel room late Wednesday night.

A complaint was lodged by the junior students, whose face swelled due to overnight ragging, only Friday after they mustered courage.

'The accused students are on the run. They have left the hostels but will soon be arrested,' city superintendent of police Lal Umed Singh said.

College principal Geeta Tiwari called an emergency meeting of the college management to discuss the issue and offer assistance to the victims.

Hostel warden D.G. Sharma said the college management will work closely with the police to ensure the accused were punished.
