Paramilitary forces on poll duty leave Jammu and Kashmir

National,Politics, Fri, 26 Dec 2008 IANS

Jammu, Dec 26 (IANS) Of the 450 companies of paramilitary forces that were deployed in Jammu and Kashmir for the recently concluded assembly elections, 100 companies will leave the state Saturday, a police official said Friday.

'A hundred companies will leave tomorrow (Saturday), while the rest will leave by mid-January,' the official told IANS.

He added that the state government had requisitioned 600 companies of paramilitary forces but only 450 were sent for the seven-phase assembly elections in the state. However, polling was conducted peacefully and 63 percent of the six million voters exercised their franchise.

While 650 companies of paramilitary forces were deployed for the polls in 1996, the number fell to 500 in 2002.
