'The Dark Knight' not to hit Chinese screens owing to 'cultural sensitivities'

Melbourne, December 25 (ANI): Batman hit 'The Dark Knight', the second highest-grossing flick in US box-office history, will not be released in China, according to Warner Bros.

The 2008 superhero film, which earned more than 500 million dollars, would be missed out on by Chinese audience after the studio cited "cultural sensitivities" as one of the reasons behind the no-show decision.

"Based on a number of pre-release conditions that are being attached to The Dark Knight as well as cultural sensitivities to some elements of the film, we have opted to forego a theatrical release of the film in China," News.com.au quoted the statement as saying.

The year 2006 had seen Chinese officials barring the release of 'Memoirs of a Geisha' owing to its depiction of Japanese prostitutes enacted by Chinese actresses that could have invited public disapproval.

Taiwanese director Ang Lee's 2005 gay cowboy romantic drama 'Brokeback Mountain' had also not seen a release in China. (ANI)
