Mumbai, Dec 24 (ANI): Police with the help of volunteers from a non governmental organisation (NGO) here rescued eleven child labourers working in various shops.
Acting on a tip-off, volunteers of Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA), an NGO, informed the concerned state authorities and successfully completed the operation.
Voluneteers along with police and authorities of the labour department raided many parts of Malvani and Malad areas and rescued eleven children aged between 14 and 16 years.
"From Malvani and Malad areas, we rescued 11 children who were doing embroidery and sewing work and from a hotel as well. BBA played an important role in this operation. As per BBA, information Labour Department, Women Child Development Centre and police were able to complete this operation," said Farah Mukadam, a sub-divisional magistrate.
Mukdam further added that they were expecting more child labourers from these areas, but as the news spread in advance they might have escaped from the site.
Rakesh Senger, national Secretary of BBA said that proper rehabilitation facilities would be provided to them to ensure that they don't get back to work.
"They would be sent back to their villages. Earlier, whenever children were rescued in Mumbai, they used to undergo action against child labour act and judges act. But there used to be no rehabilitation facilities available. But now they would be given at least 20 thousand rupees as rehabilitation amount and would get facility of lifelong pension of 400 rupees. All the advantages of society protection would be given to them so that they don't get involved in child labour activities again. This is a holistic approach of the entire team of BBA," said Rakesh.Despite of the 1986 Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, child labour is still very rampant in India due to extreme poverty.
Millions of children work in dangerous conditions making firecrackers, textile ancillaries, hand-rolled cigarettes and glass, exposed to hazardous chemicals and open furnaces spewing toxic gases.
Human rights groups say many children have been working since the age of four or five, and by the time they reach adulthood, they may be irrevocably sick or deformed. (ANI)
