July 23: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today suspended five MLAs of Gujarat allegedly going against party norms and campaign against the chief minister Narendra Modi. The party president Rajnath Singh today announced the names as Gordhan Jhadafia, Balubhai Tanti, Bavku Ughad, Becharbhai Bhadani and Dheeru Gajera who are engaged in various campaigns against the CM, according to party sources.
As earlier some of the state BJP MLAs had voted for UPA-Left presidential candidate Pratibha Patil, it was obvious for the party to take firm action against those rebel MPs and MLAs.
In the Presidential election there were seven cross votings from BJP and in response to this senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj and LK Advani had told that it is difficult to take action against those MPs or MLA in a free and fair election.
However, few days back one of the State BJP leader had made it clear the party can not tolerate any indiscipline ahead of party’s norms and hence would take action against those but at the right time.
Earlier on July 19 prior to the presidential poll, some of the top most state BJP leaders had not attended the meeting called by the party in connection with the president election. This had made it clear that there is storm inside the party and that may act against the party’s wishes in both the presidential and vice-presidential poll.
Though party has pointed this suspension as indiscipline but this can be a clear cut step relating to the presidential poll and also Modi’s rivalry with Keshubhai Patel. The recent development may further increase the bitterness between Modi and his rival Keshubhai as those five suspended MLAs are believed to be closer to Keshubhai Patel.
