SP supports deal, but tight lipped on supporting govt

New Delhi, Sat, 05 Jul 2008 Vikash Ranjan

The latest hot and happening development on Friday in the political arena either caught eyeballs of different political leaders or else raised others' eyebrows, say Left leaders, when after the meeting with the Prime Minister and the UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, the Samajwadi Party leaders Amar Singh and Mulayam Singh Yadav vehemently supported the nuclear deal citing it was in national interest, but kept themselves tight lipped on their commitment to support government.

Although they refused to committing support to the government yet, but his support to the nuclear deal, the prime worry of the Congress as the time for finalising the deal is running out, in itself is an indication of their standing shoulder to shoulder with the government, if the need arrives.

Despite the formal announcement on support to the ruling-Congress government, which might be their helplessness for the time being owing to disagreement of other members of the UNPA, one thing is clear, either the SP would participate in the ruling government or would provide support from outside in case the Left withdrew support from the government.

On the contrary, support to the UPA government would mean disintegration of the opportunist Third Front with its largest constituent, SP's parting ways. And, if Mulayam does so, it must not be considered contempt on his part as the history of the Third Front witnesses its constituent’s arrival and departure led by either their regional obligation or opportunistic approach.

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) supported the NDA government and became organ of the government after breaking its relation with the Third Front and again after the fall of the NDA government returned to the Third Front. Laloo Yadav, once the ardent member of the Third Front, is now a vital constituent of the Congress-led UPA government. So, if Mulayam goes on the footsteps of his political colleague, it would be just a repeat of history, and not any contempt on his part.

The Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh along with the party's general secretary Amar SIngh after coming straight from the 7, Race Course Road, the PM's residence though appeared tight lipped about the details of the “deal over the deal,” but said to reporters, “we have been opposing the nuclear deal as we did not have new facts regarding the deal. But now these new details have been provided by the Prime Minister, so we have changed our stand on it.” Now, there is no question of opposing the nuclear deal with the United States under the new light thrown by the PM and the respected nuclear scientist, Dr. Kalam.

The SP leaders, Singh and Yadav, though went a step back from commenting to a query, which asked it means you are committing to support the government, in case of no-confidence motion against the government. Instead, the leaders said we would convey the new facts of the nuclear deal to convince other UNPA's constituents and would decide thereby.

The Congress-SP alliance, if comes into existence, would unravel a new chapter in the regional politics of the Uttar Pradesh, where their chief contender BSP is all set to make “nuclear deal with the US' an election issue and widening its vote bank as well by amalgamating Muslims by saying that “nuclear deal with the America is against national interest and against Muslims.”

Meanwhile the four Left party's chiefs have issued an ultimatum to the ruling government asking to make its stand clear on nuclear deal by July 7, the day when the PM Manmohan Singh will leave for Japan to participate in the G-8 summit.

The coming few days again are being expected to be full of hot and happenings in the political arena.
