New Delhi, Dec 19 (IANS) Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Friday inspected the controversial Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor between Ambedkar Nagar and Delhi Gate to ascertain the reasons behind the frequent traffic jams on the stretch and suggested ways to improve the situation.
Following the inspection, Dikshit directed authorities to ensure that there was no hindrance to the flow of traffic on the corridor like building material stacked on the road or vehicles parked on the stretch, officials said.
The chief minister was accompanied by Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister P.K. Tripathi, chairman and managing director Of Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System S.N. Sahay, Transport Commissioner R.K. Verma and Joint Commissioner of Police S.N. Srivastava.
'The inspection revealed that while the corridor was by and large functioning properly, the problems were created due to weak enforcement. It was observed that traffic flow on the road was being hindered because of stacking of building material and parking of vehicles along with corridor,' said a Delhi government official.
The chief minister directed that bus stops be made on the left side in the stretch from Defence Colony to Delhi Gate as this would help the government in comparing the merits and demerits in the pattern of bus stops on the BRT stretch being in the middle vis-à-vis on the side.
Dikshit also directed Rail India Technical & Economic Services (RITES) officials to devise ways and means to increase the area available for flow of traffic in the corridor.
A pet project of the chief minister, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had promised to scrap the corridor if it was elected to power.
