July 20: The prime witness of the BMW hit and run case Sunil Kulkarni again taking a U-turn from his earlier statement refused to identify the main accused Nanda as the man coming out of the car which ran over 6people leaving all of them dead.

Kulkarni while appearing before the Patiala House Court on Thursday told that he had seen a man like Nanda coming out of the car but is not sure whether it was actually Nanda.

He told the court that due to circumstances it was not possible to see the faces of the car occupants near the accident spot.

Barely a week ago he had informed the court that he had seen a person like Sanjeev Nanda, now for the fourth time he made fluctuations in his statements given to the court.

Reportedly in the year 1999, Nanda and his friends while driving his BMW crushed 6 people to death near the Lodhi Hotel, Delhi. The police later found blood stain on the car and on the basis of the evidence picked up from the car and Kulkarni’s earlier statement sent Nanda to Jail. But after spending 9 months in jail he bailed out after Kulkarni changed his statement that it was a truck and not a BMW.

Kulkarni in July 11 statements to the court had told that he had heard someone shouting “Sanjeev lets leave the place” but later during cross examination he told that he is not sure about the name.

Few months back the case again came into scanner as a sting operation conducted by a private TV channel showed public prosecutor and defense council maneuvering Kulkarni to change his statement.

Though the Supreme Court Bar Council immediately suspended the two lawyers but later restored their membership after clearing them from all allegations.

Examining these flip-flops in Kulkarni’s statement the police filed a report to drop him from the witness list but later the court summoned him as a witness. The next hearing in the case is to be held on August 06.
