Ranchi, Dec 10 (IANS) Hundreds of villagers and social worker Medha Patkar Wednesday linked their hands together to protest land acquisition by the state government in Dumka district of Jharkhand.
The villagers are agitating against the proposed displacement of hamlets for building two power plants in the area.
'Do not kick on our stomachs,' said banners displayed by the agitators.
'We do not want to lose our land. Electricity will not ensure food to our children. We want food grain, not electricity,' were some of the slogans shouted by people who participated in the human chain.
Patkar said: 'The state government should hold dialogue with the villagers. He (Chief Minister Shibu Soren) became leader by advocating cause of the tribals of Dumka.'
Last week more than two dozen villagers and six policemen were injured in a clash over land acquisition in the Kathikund village of Dumka district.
