Congress Legislature Party meets to select CMs

New Delhi, Wed, 10 Dec 2008 NI Wire

As the political battle is over in five states with mixed results for both Congress and BJP, the Congress Legislature party meetings in both Delhi and Rajasthan are likely to elect their leaders later on Wednesday.

Under the leadership of Sheila Dikshit, the Congress gained an overwhelming majority in Delhi with 42 seats in the 70-member Delhi Assembly, while the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had to be content with 23 seats.

In the national capital, Congress came to power for a third consecutive victory and the Delhi Congress Legislature Party (CLP) will meet today to elect its new leader, though it seems obvious with the name Sheila Dikshit considering her performance in the last 10 years.

The meeting will be chaired by Congress General Secretary Mohsina Kidwai and Union Minister of State for Finance P. K. Bansal.

While in Rajasthan where Congress replaced the five-year rule of Vasundhara Raje led BJP government too has to choose the name for the post of the chief minister. Former Chief Minister and senior congress leader Ashok Gehlot is now the front runner for the post.

In Rajasthan, Congress obtained 96 seats- 5 short of the clear majority to form the government in the 200-seat state Assembly, while BJP only managed to get hold of 78 constituencies. There are 14 independent candidates who won of which Congress claimed to have support of at least 8 taking the Congress tally to 104, above the magic number of 101.

Meanwhile in Chhattisgarh, Raman Singh will be sworn-in-as chief minister on Friday. He led the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to victory with 50 seats in the 90-member assembly, while the Congress settled with 38.

On the other side, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is likely to take charge on Friday for the second time on December 12. BJP bagged 143 out of 230 as Congress failed to cash on the anti–incumbency factors and only obtained 71 seats.
