Goa Police unaware of British Princess's presence in state

National, Tue, 09 Dec 2008 IANS

Panaji, Dec 9 (IANS) The Goa Police was unaware of the presence of British princess Eugenie holidaying at a South Goa beach until a local newspaper Tuesday ran the story based on a report in British tabloid Daily Mail.

'We were not told about it. If we had been informed about her visit, we could have given her some protection,' Superintendent of Police Tony Fernandes, who is in charge of VVIP security in Goa told IANS.

Princess Eugenie, who is in Goa travelling as a backpacker, is the younger daughter of Prince Andrew, Duke of York and Sarah, Duchess of York and sixth in the line of succession to the British throne.

When asked about the onus of responsibility, in case of any untoward incident, Fernandes contended the state police could not be held responsible.

'We should be at least informed about any VVIP presence for the sake of protocol. If we do not know, how can you blame us,' he said.

The princess, according to the Daily Mail story, is staying in a beach hut, which costs 13 pounds a night, in a South Goan coastal village called Palolem, 85 km south of Panaji, which is known for its relatively pristine beaches and beach huts.

But according to the paper, she is not holidaying alone.

'Buckingham Palace ordered that the younger daughter of the Duke and Duchess of York be accompanied by two policemen, both detective sergeants with firearms certificates,' says the story, published Monday.

The story further claims that princess Eugenie was residing at the Taj Mahal hotel in Mumbai and had moved to Palolem only a day before the 26/11 terror attack.
