New Delhi, Dec 9 (IANS) Dejection has gripped the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Delhi after its 'unexpected' drubbing at the hands of the Congress, with many BJP workers still wondering what went wrong for the party when victory had seemed a certainty.
A day after the BJP lost Delhi yet again to the Congress, which registered its third straight win, the mood at the party office in 14, Pandit Pant Marg, was sombre.
'Yes, there is sadness among our leaders and party workers, which is bound to happen whenever the results are not in your favour. But it is a temporary phase,' party spokesperson Mewa Ram Arya told IANS.
One disappointed party supporter Vinod Kumar said: 'I can't even tell you how disappointed I am. I had never ever thought that my party would lose. We don't know what went wrong for the BJP.'
The BJP won 23 seats in the 70-member Delhi assembly while the Congress won 42 seats. After sweeping the civic body polls last year, the BJP was confident of winning Delhi this time.
Delhi BJP chief Harshvardhan told IANS in a grim tone: 'Sadness is natural whenever someone loses. But we are looking forward.'
Arya denied that the party cadre was demoralised.
'Our cadre is not demoralised. We will continue our struggle for the rights of Delhiites. Our seat tally has at least improved from last time.' The BJP had bagged 20 seats in the last elections.
Putting up a brave front, Arya said: 'We won the MCD elections. Now we will prepare for the next fight, the parliamentary elections, which are scheduled for next year.'
Meanwhile, party supporters are concentrating their efforts in Rajinder Nagar area to try and ensure another victory. Balloting had been deferred in the seat after the sudden death of BJP candidate Puran Chand Yogi last month. The wife of Yogi is fighting on a BJP ticket from the area.
