Bangalore, Dec 9 (ANI): Christians in Bangalore played host to Christmas celebrations for the riot victims of Kandhamal district in Orissa. The Global Council of Indian Christians described it as a small gesture for riot victims to allow them to feel the Christmas spirit. Around 20 victims were brought down to Bangalore for the purpose.
Sajan George, the founder president of the Global Council of Indian Christians, said: "They are living in different relief camps in Kandhamal. Last year, they could not celebrate Christmas. There is a threat that the 2008 Christmas will also not be allowed in Orissa. We will allow them to be here and enjoy Christmas. We put the Christmas spirit into them and into the world."
Leaving behind their pain and trauma, the victims, mainly widows, took part in prayers sessions, singing of carols and in cultural programs.
Earlier this year, dozens of people were killed in a string of religious attacks in the state sparked over alleged forced conversions forcing more than 20,000 people into refugee camps and shelters.
Violence in Kandhamal erupted after armed men killed a Hindu leader linked to the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and four others. (ANI)
