Kolkata, Dec 4 (IANS) A primary school teacher here was beaten up by locals and handed over to the police after he thrashed his students, three of whom were hospitalised with serious injuries Thursday, police said.

The incident took place at Jairampur Satiprasanna Primary School at Behala in south Kolkata.

'Mathematics teacher Jayanta Sarkar fell off a broken chair as he was taking his seat at a Class 4 classroom Thursday morning. Believing that students had broken the legs of the chair to play a prank, he started beating all 30 students in the class with a scale,' Sudharanjan Sarkar, officer-in-charge (OC) of Behala police station, told IANS.

'Three students - Sougata Das, Priyanka Kayal and Abhijit Halder - suffered serious injuries and have been admitted to the nearby Vidyasagar Hospital,' he added.

When residents of the area came to know that Jayanta Sarkar had beaten his students, they thrashed him and handed him over to the police.

'Residents of the area demanded the teacher's resignation. When he tried to flee from the school premises, they kicked, slapped and beat him in public. They handed him to the police around 1 p.m.,' the officer said.
