Colaco may lose out in AIFF turf war

National,Sports, Mon, 24 Nov 2008 IANS

New Delhi, Nov 24 (IANS) All India Football Federation (AIFF) general secretary Alberto Colaco is unlikely to seek an extension of his contract after its expiry Dec 31.

Colaco was appointed as a paid general secretary in 2005 and the new executive committee to be formed at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) Dec 23 is unlikely to extend his contract, a top federation official told IANS, adding that even Colaco is not too keen on staying on.

'Not sure of the new committee renewing his contract, Colaco has informed acting president Praful Patel that he is not keen on continuing as general secretary,' the official told IANS.

Colaco, a close aide of AIFF president Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, has apparently antagonised a powerful section of the AIFF and realised that he would not get enough support to continue in office. The former Goa Football Association (GFA) secretary has lost out in the ongoing power-struggle with Dasmunsi lying critically ill in a Delhi hospital.

Some of the officials have made no secret of their angst over Colaco's continuance to Patel, the union civil aviation minister, and told him that the former GFA secretary should not be given an extension.

'Some members of the executive committee have told Patel bhai that Coalco should be replaced. That has put the minister in a fix as his ministerial colleague Dasmunsi heavily relied on Colaco. Patel bhai has a tough decision to make,' the official said.

The officials, however, have not zeroed in on any replacement for Colaco and eventually it would be left to Patel to pick the new general secretary when he forms the new executive.

It was widely believed that Colaco was keen on managing the proposed AIFF-Bharti Football Academy in Goa after finishing his term as general secretary. The academy, however, has run into logistical problems and is in a limbo.
