Gujjar protest ends with 5% special quota

After weeks of protest, finally the agitation of Gujjar (or Gurjar) community comes to an end as the Rajasthan Government announces a 5 percent special quota for Gujjars, Banjaras and Rebaris communities from within the existing Other Backward Castes (OBC) quota.


After the final and the successful fifth round talk between the Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and Gurjar leader Colonel (retd) Kirori Singh Bainsla, the outcome was announced by both the leaders at a joint press conference at the state capital in Jaipur on Wednesday.

BJP leader Ram Das Agarwal led the delegation of state government in their talks with Gujjar and after rounds of negotiations and compromise, they reach to the conclusion in favour of the 5 crore people of the state.

The state administration has also sent a letter to the Centre making a special category for Gujjars, Banjaras and Rebaris. Now it’s up to the Central government to implement the proposed quota.

Speaking at the press conference, the State Chief Minister expressed her hope for peace and development in the coming days. Bainsla too appreciating Vasundhara Raje’s effort said: ‘the community is great full to Raje, who is a good administrator and there will be no need to hold protest in future as Gujjars have achieved their demand.’

Meanwhile, the State is also agreed to give compensation of five lakhs and one laks respectively to the families of the dead and injured and in addition a promise of government job to one family member.

It is to mention here that the 27-day long protest which came to its climax on Wednesday has claimed life of over 40 lives. The Gujjars were demanding Schedule Tribe status to get hold of the benefits specified for the same.
