Yeddyurappa to unfold ministry; wins confidence motion

The first expansion of the eight-day-old ministry led by Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa in Karnataka will take place on Saturday with the swearing in of Katta Subramanya Naidu as the cabinet rank minister. With his induction into the cabinet ministries, the strength of the cabinet will be enhanced to 31.

The formal commencement of the BJP's first government in Southern India just started on Friday with Yeddyurappa's crossing the first major obstacle by winning the confidence vote in the Legislative Assembly.

It took just three hours for concluding the vote of confidence motion. Talking to media after completing the constitutional process, the overwhelmed Yeddyurappa said, “I am happy with the victory and thank all those who have extended support to us.” “Vote of confidence has given our party five years to prove our manifesto and stand up the expectation of the people,” he added further.

The BJP won the vote of confidence through a voice vote, which comprised the support of the six Independents, five of whom had been inducted into the Cabinet on May 30.

The Congress members following the Leader of Opposition Mallikarjuna Kharge walked out of the House accusing the BJP government of being indignant towards the farmers' plight facing shortage of fertilizers and seeds for cultivation.

But the only other opposition members of the JD(S) under the party leader and former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy sat throughout the Motion process and acted as responsible Opposition party. They were present even when the Speaker Jagadish Shettar sought a voice vote of all the members.

However, Kumaraswamy later ridiculed Yeddyurappa: "By taking oath in the name of the farmer, one cannot solve farmers' problems. When the farmers across the state are protesting non-supply of fertilisers, you do not seem to be moved by their cries."

On the other hand, Yeddyurappa hoped to complete a full term in office by following and implementing the development to Karnataka.

The Speaker called the voice vote and came out with the decision that Yeddyurappa led government has won the confidence motion. After that the House was adjourned till the 23rd of this month. The Assembly will convene again for three days from June 23 to express thanks to the Governor for his address.

The elections in Karnataka for the 224-member Legislative Assembly were held in three phases on May 10, 16 and 22 in which Bharatiya Janata Party came victorious with 110 seats just three short of simple majority, succeeded by the second largest Congress party with 80 seats and Janata Dal (Secular) with the lowest 28 seats.

The BJP took the oath of governing the state with the help of six Independents which supported Yeddyurappa and consequently five of whom were paid by allotting the rank of cabinet minister.
