New Delhi, Sat, 31 May 2008 NI Wire

Issuing a clarification over the Ansar Burney issue, the Government of India in a press statement pronounced that Mr Burney was denied entry and not deported due to inadequacy in travel document.

The government also spelt out that the inconvenience to Mr. Burney is unfortunate and regrettable and he is always welcome to visit India. This has also been conveyed to him by a senior officer who spoke to Mr. Burney today.

However, to common man’s knowledge it is highly regrettable that a person of such stature was denied entry and sent back to Dubai on his arrival at Delhi IGI Airport on Friday night.

The whole incident has brought embarrassment to Indian government and criticism from all quarters as being one of the well known human rights activist such minor legal wrangles should have easily processed by the authority.

Burney who has been played an anchor role in the release of Indian prisoners in Pakistan is recognised in both parts of the world as one of the respected Pakistan national, though in some instances his humanitarian work had come under criticism in Pakistan.

Lately he successfully petitioned Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf to pardon an Indian national Kashmir Singh on humanitarian grounds who had spent 35 years in jail for alleged spying. He is also working to save another Indian national Sarabjit Singh from the gallows, which has recently been stayed by the Pakistan government.

Burney however said he would not make the incident as any excuse and would continue his efforts in securing the release of Sarabjit Singh including other Indians languishing in Pakistani jails and also work for the release of Pakistani nationals lodged in Indian prisons.
