Demanding again the POTA or alike- strong anti-terror law, the Bhartiya Janata Party left no stone unturned on attacking Congress for knowingly or unknowingly giving shelter to terrorists. The BJP questioned, ‘how far a government can be said fair in its commitment to fight against terror, if its policies are terrorists' friendly’.
Unflinching a blunt attack on Prime Minister, the Saffron Party said on Sunday, “Dr. Manmohan Singh's bona fides in the war against terror are a suspect. He has used his softness on terror for vote bank politics rather than for security considerations.”
The BJP's sharp reaction came at the backdrop of Prime Minister's advocacy on Saturday for instituting federal crime agency to fight the transnational threat and his appeal to state governments to stop resisting the setting up of a federal investigation agency if India was to counter terrorism effectively.
BJP asked under Dr. Manmohan Singh and the UPA, can a federal agency be trusted citing government's scandalous record of misusing central investigative agency, CBI for political purposes in the last four years.
BJP's general secretary Arun Jaitley expressed his doubt over Prime Minister's commitment for fighting against terrorism and said Singh's bona fides in the war against terror were a suspect. Dr. Singh has used his softness on terror for political considerations rather than security.
“Will the Prime Minister have the political courage to strengthen the content of India’s anti-terrorist laws?” he asked.
Citing UPA's track record of four years, Jaitley asked if PM inspired confidence that he would implement his proposal for a federal agency against terror.
The repeal of POTA, not giving assent to implementing anti-terror laws in BJP ruled states-Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Rajasthan, helping the accused being prosecuted under POTA for burning Sabarmati Express, and non-execution of Afzal Guru are, Jaitley ironically said, some of the achievements of UPA government during four years of rule that establishes his credibility in battling against terrorisms.
‘Apart from not implementing anti-terror law in the country, whenever BJP tried to implementing POTA in three BJP ruled states, the Union government had deliberately not given presidential assent to make it effective. The jurisdiction to legislate against terrorism rests with the Central Government,’ Jaitley said.
He went on to say that according to the Supreme Court war against terrorisms comprises the war against sovereignty and defence of India and so legislation against terror falls in the domain of the central government. Despite holding legislative and executive power to introduce and enact laws in this matter, why the Prime Minister did not formulate an effective terror laws, is just out of considerations. Jaitley said that simply shows the government is not serious in battling and curbing terrorism.
A day before similar attack was led by L K Advani saying the UPA government's failure to contain price rise is threatening common man's economic security, and its failure to contain terrorism is threatening the India's national security.
