June 20: In the Bitti rape case the accused seems beyond the reach of the law and justice continues to be deferred. A high official, B.B. Mohanti, and the Orissa government are acting as a shield to protect the prime accused, B.B. Mohanti’s son Bitti for allegedly raping a German student.
In a recent development, a local Rajasthan government issued a non-bailable warrant against B.B. Mohanty and set a deadline July 7. The Rajasthan Police have also sent the same to its counterpart in Orissa, but the Orissa government has denied executing it.
From the last couple of months the Orissa DG B.B. Mohanti is under constant scanner of Rajasthan police for helping his son, an accused in a rape case, to jump parole which has led a police team sniffing to Orissa with an arrest warrant. However Orissa Police has least cared about the matter and shown a lot of disrespect and negligence of duties. Mohanti has been reported as being on medical leave and it is not possible for a police team belonging to the other state to trace him.
As per the warrant the Rajasthan Police has handed over the request to the Orissa Police to arrest B.B. Mohanti, but on Tuesday the state government announced its non-cooperation and put down the warrant as defective.
In a statement, Orissa Principal Secretary of Home Department, Tarunkanti Mishra, told “After considering all legal aspects and the background of the case, the warrant looks defective and hence we can’t help in this regard.” However, he didn’t elaborate on the defective points of the warrant.
The case should move in such a manner that Orissa government should make a due effort to help maintain the law and order and to bring culprit to justice. If it continues like this then neither Rajasthan police can arrest Bitti Mohanti nor will justice be provided to the victim.
