Movie Review: Hope & a Little Sugar

New Delhi, Sat, 19 Apr 2008 NI Wire

After a long gap we got to hear from Tanuja Chandra who has done many women centric film like Dushman, Sangharsh and Jindagi Rocks. After her last film Jindagi… which did not fair well, her two days old film ‘Hope & Little Sugar’ comes as a cool shot inspired by 9/11 which changed the contour of the whole world.

The film revolves around a Sikh family where Anupam Kher plays the role of a Sikh colonel and lives with his family in Manhattan. Suddenly the ground beneath him shook and he lost his son (Vikram Chatwal) during an attack on the World Trade Centre on 9/11.

Maverick Anupam has again displayed his unique performance as a father who has been not able to come in term with the loss of his son. As a father he died million deaths accepting that his son is no more. Frustrated with the religion which unfortunately suffered more than the terrorists in the whole world aftermath of the incident, Anupam too find a Muslim man Ali (Amit Sial), a young photographer who has been accepted by Anupam’s family member and is in love with Anupam’s daughter in law Saloni (Mahima Chaudhary) as the sole reason for his son’s death.

But as if life has its own way to teach, one day Kher too become a victim of racial violence because of his turban and from here things changes, a hope is borne which will give a new meaning to life that’s Hope & Little Sugar for you.

But the movie though with a nice subject has not been able to evoke the same sentiment as in another film based on the same theme Khuda ke Liye, because of the less defined character and integrity of the movie which moves abruptly from one frame to another.

The viewers though not able to connect with the character’s emotion have liked the Anupam’s performance where he finds himself in helpless situation first while he breaks down after his son died and second when he was beaten ruthlessly by racists. Mahima’s return is not that intense but overall good so is Vikram Chatwal in his small role.

Produced by two New York based independent film Producers, Glenn Russow and Scott Pardo the film was first screened in film festival at Goa two years back and had bagged good response.

Coming to the music delivered by Rick Baitz, Wayne Sharp and playback by Sonu Nigam and Jassi has little to do though fairly compliment more often as background score.

Overall, Hope & a Little Sugar is a love story with a backdrop of terrorism and good to watch some power packed performance.
