Notice to Delhi Police on Jamia Nagar suspects

National, Wed, 22 Oct 2008 IANS

New Delhi, Oct 22 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Wednesday issued notice to the Delhi Police on the custodial status of two suspected terrorists who have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the Sept 13 serial blasts in the national capital.

Justice Kailash Gambhir issued the notice on a petition of Mohammad Shakeel and Zeeshan Ahmed seeking quashing of the order allowing their police custody till Oct 27. The police was asked to file its reply by Oct 31.

In their plea, Shakeel and Zeeshan challenged the Oct 16 order of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sanjeev Jain sending them to police custody. They contended that since they were in custody for the last 32 days, there was no need to again send them to police custody as this was unfair.

"The longer the accused has been in custody, the stronger should be the grounds required for a further remand to police custody," counsel Prashant Bhushan contented before the high court.

Shakeel and Zeeshan were arrested after a controversial shoot out south Delhi's Jamia Nagar here Sep 19 in which two suspected terrorists were killed, with many believing the incident was stage managed. A highly decorated Delhi Police inspector was also killed in the gun battle.
