National, Tue, 21 Oct 2008 IANS

Kolkata, Oct 21 (IANS) A bank's collection agent was attacked and robbed of Rs.2 million just outside the bank premises here. But, the dog squad sniffed out the booty dumped in a corner of the building's staircase, the police said Tuesday.

The incident took place at the entrance of Canara Bank's Sealdah branch in north Kolkata.

'Saikat Barua, 30, was going to the bank Tuesday to deposit his collections. Suddenly he was attacked at the entrance by three criminals who robbed him of about Rs.2 million. Barua received serious knife injuries,' city police deputy commissioner (headquarters) Vinet K. Goyal told reporters.

'The dog squad reached the spot and after a thorough search found the booty dumped in a corner of the staircase of the bank itself. One of the criminals was arrested Tuesday evening,' Goyal added.

A police official said it was strange that the criminals dumped the booty at the staircase instead of taking it away with them.
