New Delhi, Mon, 20 Oct 2008 NI Wire

On the Appeal of Aligarh Muslim University teacher Association, teachers of AMU have decided to go on two-day strike on Oct 22 and 23.

Dr. Abdus Salam, secretary AMU Teacher’s Association said that Federation of Central University Teachers Association (FEDCUTA) has decided a two-day strike from this coming Wednesday to push for an early decision on the teachers’ pay revision as proposed by University Grant Commission (UGC). AMU is a part of this Federation, so we are also going with them, he added.

Members of the FEDCUTA are also in favour of the existing four tier structure - lecturer, lecturer in senior scale, reader and professor instead of creating a seven-tier structure as recommended by the Chadha Committee.

In the meeting, AMU Teachers Association made an appeal to all teachers not to teach in the classes and even not to go to the departments on Oct 22 and 23, 2008.

On asking a question about the effects of this strike on students’ studies, Prof Shamim Ahmad, Principal, Women’s Polytechnic, AMU said this is country wide strike of Central Universities.

Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Allahabad University (AU), Assam University (AU), Delhi University (DU), Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), Jamia Millia Islamia University, Jamia Hamdard, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Manipur University, Mizoram University, Nagaland University, National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), North-East Hill University, Pondicherry University, Rajeev Gandhi University, University of Hyderabad, Vishwa Bharati University and associate members of the Federation of Central Universities Teachers’ Association (FEDCUTA) have called strike for only two days and not an indefinite strike.

The Teaching faculty of Delhi based various universities, are requested to enlighten the University & College Teachers of rest of the country, (who are otherwise in the dark) through a press note, on the latest position of UGC revised scales implementation & much awaited announcement by HRD. So that, the anxiety about the implementation of revised scales, could have at least an answer. It seems, Politicians are pre-occupied with strategies on seeking fresh mandate, Officials are in other work... Who else could think of the welfare of Higher Education Teaching Faculty, at present ? In spite of this piquant situation, Kindly prevail over authorities, if the later are in quandary over implementation during the election euphoria presently sweeping the country, by explicitly explaining the genuine nature of, not of our demand but of Govt.'s obligation to do some thing good for society in general & for Higher Education Teachers in particular.

I am very happy to see that FEDCUTA is striving a lot, to see immediate implementation of revised pay scales & to improve the economic condition of Teaching Faculty across the country. It is disheartening to note that there is intentional sauntering, it seems, on the part of authorities in implementation of new scales, revised after a decade. I, specially congratulate AMU & other Universities' associations for backing solidly FEDCUTA at first instance. It is a common practice in this country that teachers are compelled to fight for new scales. Yes, we are also accustomed to it.Despite this disturbance once in a decade, Indian Teachers of Higher Education continue to discharge their duties in class rooms. Yes, it is the magnanimity of teachers, of this holy land. Hope that Govt. of India would take immediate steps to redress the genuine grievance of this section.
