Jammu, Oct 18 (IANS) Lieutenant General R.K. Swamy Saturday took over as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of 16 Corps that is headquartered at Nagrota in Jammu and Kashmir, an official said Saturday.
The 16 Corps guards the rugged and mountainous Line of Control in the Jammu region, besides being involved in counter-infiltration and counter-terrorist operations.
The corps commander also functions as the 'security advisor to government in the Jammu region that maintains highest level of synergy among the security forces, intelligence agencies and civil administration in the region'.
An army spokesman said: 'Swamy has an extremely distinguished service profile. He has commanded a battalion and a brigade in the Eastern Sector and a Force Headquarters in the Northern Sector.'
Swamy succeeds Lt. Gen. R.K. Karwal who has been posted to New Delhi as Director General of the National Cadet Corps (NCC).
