Jet retracts, reinstates sacked employees

New Delhi, Fri, 17 Oct 2008 NI Wire

After two days of mayhem borne out of dismissal of employees by the country’s leading Aviation Company in the private sector that placed them restless, the Jet Airways decided on Thursday to reinstate their employees and asked them to join their duty from the very next day.

At a press conference hastily called by Jet Airways chairman, Naresh Goyal said: “I apologise for all the agony you had to go through for two days. You can all come back to work from tomorrow. We have decided to take back all the employees.”

I was not part of the decision. The decision of terminating employees was taken by management without my consent. All employees are part of my family; I could not sleep since I heard the disappointing decision, he emotionally said.

He, however, defended the Management saying Jet Airways had been going under tremendous loss. Perhaps the Management took the decision under pressure. But terminating of employees is not the right decision. The company is in loss and we all will fight with it collectively-which means, as Goyal said, discussion will be laid on various issues such as re-assessment of salaries including reduction in expenditures.

Refusing any external pressure on him for sudden U-turn, he firmly said that he believes they all can deal with the situation and decide how to fly and keep the airline offload.

On Monday, Jet Airways announced a tie-up with Kingfisher Airlines for an “operational alliance” comprising joint fuel management, ground handling, network rationalisation and crew sharing.

The tie-up was made owing to soaring global fuel price that had forced airlines to hike fares and cut routes that hit scores of passengers.

The aviation sector posted a combined loss of 938 million dollars in the fiscal year to March 2008 and analysts expect a two-billion dollar loss in the current financial year.

A day later of alliance, the Jet Airways terminated over 800 employees and said the number would rise to 1900.

The decision met with all round condemnation from employees to political parties saying “hire and fire” policy must not let go.
