Peace returning to violence-hit Assam districts: Ahmed

National, Sun, 12 Oct 2008 IANS

Mangaldoi (Assam), Oct 12 (IANS) Shakeel Ahmed, union minister of state for home, Sunday said peace was fast returning to the violence-torn Assam districts although a sense of fear and insecurity still prevails after ethnic clashes last week killed 55 people and displaced over 200,000.

'It is good to see that people in general want peace and harmony in the region although it is true that there is some sense of insecurity in the area,' the minister told journalists.

Ahmed said this after visiting Sunday at least six relief camps in the two northern Assam districts of Udalguri and Darrang.

He is a heading a three-member team deputed by Congress party president Sonia Gandhi to assess the situation after clashes between tribal Bodos and Muslim migrant settlers rocked the region for three days last week.

The other two members of the team are former Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Mukut Mithi and Congress MP from West Bengal A.H. Khan Choudhury.

'The central and the state governments are committed to providing all help and rehabilitate the people affected in the violence,' the minister said.

Ahmed said people, both the Bodos and the minorities, welcomed Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi's decision to seek a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the clashes.

'People in general are happy about the CBI probe and everybody wants that the culprits are brought to book and punished,' the minister said.

Over 2,500 houses were either torched or damaged in the clashes in 54 villages.

'We shall submit a detailed report to Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday,' Ahmed said.
