Kolkata, Jan 13 (ANI): Indian Finance Minister and senior Congress leader, Pranab Mukherjee, on Friday, after attending a meeting with Trinamool Congress (TMC) party leaders in Kolkata said that discussions would continue over the controversy of renaming Indira Bhavan.
Mukherjee said that senior All India Congress Committee (AICC) leader in-charge of West Bengal affairs, Shakeel Ahmed had come up with a solution over the matter, which would be discussed among the parties.
"AICC in-charge of West Bengal unit, Shakeel Ahmed has presented his views in front of the Congress leaders at Indira Bhavan. A discussion would take place between Congress and TMC over the issue," said Mukherjee.
Despite several attempts by the government, the TMC has so far refused to budge from its stand on the issue.
The face-off began after West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee decided to change the building's name from Indira Bhavan to Nazrul Bhavan, based on the acclaimed firebrand poet, Kazi Nazrul Islam.
The drift between Congress and TMC has widened over the period.
Strains were visible during a parliamentary debate on the anti-graft Ombudsman Bill, when TMC did a volte-face and opposed certain provisions in the government-draft of the legislation.
Earlier, hundreds of Congress party activists and workers held demonstrations against TMC for proposing to rename the landmark building saying the move was an 'insult' to the revered national leader. (ANI)
