Delhi to host global women's film festival

Women filmmakers would get complete forum to display her talent at a two-day film festival selected from India and abroad to be organised on March 7 and 8 at India International Centre auditorium in Delhi.

The forum to showcase women’s talent as a filmmaker is organised annually by the ‘International Association of Women in Radio and Television’ (IAWRT). The name of festival called as ‘Asian Women’s Film Festival 2008’ is in itself evident, which shows the festival is reserved for women.

The extravaganza festival is organised every year and this year is the fourth in the series. The purpose of organising such an event is to take a glimpse of women filmmakers of how they negotiate, resist, or document current issues such as political, economic, social, cultural, educational or environmental issues.

The International Association of Women in Radio and Television (IAWRT) was founded in 1951 with a view to provide a forum for personal contact and professional development among women broadcasters worldwide.

IAWRT is a non-governmental organisation of women working in electronic and allied media. Comprising women of many nationalities across the broadcast spectrum, the organisation gives women grants and fellowships and arranges international conferences with workshops, screenings, lectures, training and professional networking.

The aim of the festival is to provide exposure to women also through participating in debates on creative processes and concerns. The thought at the backdrop of this exposure is the purpose of organisation that seeks to ensure women’s views and values, an integral part of programme making.

Twenty-five short and full-length films of all tastes either documentary, fiction or animation from Australia, Japan, Pakistan, US and last but not the least India as well will be featured under the theme of ‘Insights and Aspirations.’

The event coincides with the International Women’s Day (March 8) as an occasion marked by women’s group around the world is an added significance to it.

The women’s film festival will commence with “Everyday” directed by Anupama Srinivasan and will be concluded with featuring of “Ayodhya Gatha” by Vani Subramanian.
