The one man Liberhan Ayodhya Commission of Inquiry has been extended by two months up to April 30, 2008 thus adding the total number of extension to 43 since the commission was constituted in 1992 to look into the sequence of event that led to Babri Masjid demolition.
One of the country’s longest running commissions with an investment of some hundred of lakhs of rupees was constituted during the regime of Congress Prime Minister P.V Narasimha Rao after the Masjid demolition on December 06, 1992.
In its 16 years of duration the commission is said to have recorded statements of several politicians, bureaucrats police officials including the statement of Kalyan Singh, L.K Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Uma Bharti, Mulayam Singh Yadav and also the version of late Prime Minister P.V Narsimha Rao.
The other recorded statements include that of the then district magistrate R.N. Srivastava and Senior Superintendent of Police D.B. Roy of Ayodhya.
The commission headed by Justice Mohan Singh Liberhan was originally expected to complete the inquiry in three months of time but instead the duration of the commission has been stretched too much.
The Kar Sevaks led by Advani not only demolished the Babri Masjid but also left a trail of Hindu-Muslim riots that killed thousands of people and destroyed worth crores of properties.
The inciter of the riots are humming different tunes now, Advani who has been accused to incite the mob to demolish the Masjid once confessed that the day was the most saddest day of his life and held congress responsible for the riots.
Also the then Prime Minister Narsimha Rao was questioned for his government’s inability to control the riots by putting a ban on the planned Kar Seva.
Later Narsimha gave his due explanation in his book titled Ayodhya 6 December 1992 in which he wrote various constitutional, judicial, legal and political reasons that is why he could not ban the Kar Seva.
It is also reported that there has been attempts to defeat the very purpose of this inquiry.
The Liberhan Panel report is anxiously awaited by many since its inception but nothing seems to ease the pain of waiting for such a long period for the report and the way it has been extended again and again evaporates the trust on legal machinery of democratic India.
