New Delhi, Jan 13 (ANI): Congress leader Shakeel Ahmed has urged party president Sonia Gandhi and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee to resolve the ongoing differences at the earliest, or else it would give undue advantage to rivals.
"We have urged our party president as well as leaders belonging to Trinamool Congress to sort out ongoing differences. If both of us use harsh words against each other, our rival parties would benefit from this and this would shake the foundation of our alliance. This would also be unjust for the people of West Bengal who voted for TMC and got rid of 34 years of ill governance," Ahmad told the media here.
The alliance of the TMC and the Congress had run into troubled waters on several issues like the passage of bill for the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the domestic retail market or the recent issue of the Lokpal Bill.
Strains were visible during the parliamentary debate on the anti-graft Lokpal Bill last week, when TMC did a volte-face and opposed certain provisions in the government-draft of the legislation.
Despite several attempts by the government, the TMC has so far refused to budge from its stand on the issue, leaving the Congress party fuming. The TMC and Congress have voiced their differences on several platforms in the past on the issue of price rise too.
Meanwhile, Ahmad also said Mamata Banerjee has clarified that she is not altering the name of an important landmark in the state, silencing all assumptions.
"Mamata Banerjee had recently organised a press conference and clarified that she has not changed the name of a historic landmark in the state. There were rumors in the media that she has already changed the name, which is now clarified. I think the controversy ends here and there are people who respect Indira Gandhi and want the landmark to remain named after her. If there is anything that needs to be altered, leaders of Congress party and TMC can talk about this among themselves," said Ahmad.
The face-off began after Banerjee decided to change the building's name from Indira Bhavan to Nazrul Bhavan, based on the acclaimed firebrand poet, Kazi Nazrul Islam. (ANI)
