Combating Depression through Ayurveda

Ayurveda has known to be the ultimate science of treatment for all the common and chronic ailments for centuries. Depression has been a common problem for all in today's world due to excessive stress and dissatisfaction. Depression is a mental state that is caused to an improper co ordination of body, moods and thoughts of a person that ultimately leads to symptoms like sadness, feelings of hopelessness, change in weight and even thoughts of death or suicide. The symptoms makes a person lazy, tired, unmotivated, irritable and indifferent. Depression can be a cause of several factors such as illness, financial problem, losing a job or death of loved ones.

But, the best thing about undergoing an ayurvedic treatment is, it first finds out the reason for the depression in a person and then suggests the treatment accordingly and thus curing the problem permanently. Ayurveda does not consider depression as a disease but it refers it as an imbalance in the body.

In ayurveda, depression is recognized as Chittavsada and known to occur due to the increase in rajas and tamas of mind and also due to vitiation of kapha dosha or sometimes vata too. Ayurveda has proved to be very successful in uprooting the problem of depression with the help of various ayurvedic medicines and therapies like yoga, meditation and mental counseling. In addition to that ayurvedic treatment uses several herbs for treating depression which are purely herbal and has no side effects. Some of the potential herbs used for the ayurvedic treatment of depression are:

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)

Ashwagandha is known for its excellent aphrodisiac properties which helps to remove negative thoughts from mind and improves the status of mind to remove depression.

Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri)

Brahmi is best to use before a yoga session as it helps to relax the mind and make it comfortable. Brahmi oil is quite popular due to its soothing and cooling properties and shows great results in treating depression.

Cardamom (Elattaria cardamomum)

Cardamom is known to rejuvenate the mind due to its pleasing aroma that gives a soothing effect to the nerves. It is highly recommended to consume tea with cardamom when a person is feeling depressed.

Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi)

Jatamansi has a great effect in treating depression as it shows calming effect on the mind and takes our mind to think in a positive direction by removing negative thoughts.

Guggulu (Commiphora wightii)

Guggulu contains a special chemical called guggulsterones that has been reported to improve the nervous coordination and hence, it is very useful in the treatment of depression.

Thus natural herbs has got the potential to cure depression to a great extent and hence used extensively in ayurvedic treatment. But apart from the use of medicinal herbs ayurveda also recommends many alternative therapies that are quite beneficial in the treatment of depression. Practice of yoga, pranayam and meditation are very effective against depression as they bring coordination between a person’s physical, mental and emotional states. Recommended oil massages are quite effective in promoting blood circulation, revitalization of the body and calming the mind and emotions, thus improving overall balance and health. Alternative therapies like shirodhara, shirobasti and abhayanga are very beneficial in combating depression. Many yogic asanas like bhujangasana, halasana, paschimottasana, sarvangasana, shalabhasana, shavasana and vakrasana are highly recommended to the person affected from depression. Similarly, pranayama like bhastrika and kapalbhati are very beneficial.

Thus, ayurveda can help you to fight depression and remove it permanently and helps you to live a normal life again. Moreover, ayurveda recommends to live a healthy lifestyle and a healthy food habits that can also help you in the prevention of depression.
